COURSE DIRECTOR
Andrew Singer, M.D., Ph.D.

DESCRIPTION
Each week the surgical residents, after discussion with their staffing consultants, submit cases in which morbidity/ mortality have occurred on their services the preceding week/ weeks. All surgical mortalities are presented, and the balance of cases presented, involving surgical morbidities, are chosen with an eye towards those with greatest anticipated educational value. Most commonly the conference has four cases presented by either surgical resident or surgical fellow. In addition to the conference moderator, the staffing consultant for each case is present to facilitate best discussion. The presentations detail the germane information regarding patient history, the course of events in their care, the complications, review of literature regarding the complications, and ultimately focus on opportunities for improvement.
