PRESENTATION TITLE
Bioethics and Medical Humanities: What's the Connection?
PRESENTER
John C. Tilburt, M.D.
Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Ethics, Mayo Clinic Rochester and Arizona
PRESENTER BIO
Jon Tilburt, MD, Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Ethics has spent sixteen years at Mayo Clinic conducting research, seeing patients, and mentoring at two Mayo Clinic campuses, Minnesota and Arizona. He has led training programs, served on ethics, professionalism, and humanities committees locally and nationally. Currently, he is spearheading efforts to bring greater synergy between health equity, bioethics research, clinical ethics and other psychosocial scholarly and outreach programming at Mayo Clinic Arizona. This talk will examine the sometime curious relationship between bioethics and medical humanities. After stipulating definitions of both, he will draw on the work of two eminent scholars, one in bioethics, and the other in medical humanities (Howard Brody and Rita Charon, respectively) to explore the notion of “narrative ethics” as one key point of intersection for thinking about the broader relationship between these related but distinct fields.
