Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participants should be able to:

  1. Differentiate between anorexia and cachexia.
  2. Describe the underlying pathophysiologic processes that define anorexia and cachexia.
  3. Identify impacted patient populations.
  4. Propose non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic methods to address these issues.

Bio:

Richard Guthrie, DO, achieved a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration at Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA, and subsequently went on to complete a post-baccalaureate pre-medical program at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. Upon acceptance to the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Guthrie was awarded a Health Professions Scholarship by the United States Air Force. After graduation, and completion of a rotating internship at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, Dr. Guthrie proudly served 4 years active duty as a Flight Surgeon at Luke Air Force Base, AZ, during which time he logged 222 primary flying hours in F-16D fighter aircraft and was awarded the Air Force Achievement and Commendation Medals. Dr. Guthrie completed Internal Medicine residency at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix and worked for 3 years as a Hospitalist at Banner Estrella Medical Center before entering Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship at Banner University Medical Center – Phoenix. After graduating fellowship, Dr. Guthrie practiced inpatient Palliative Medicine, and served in various leadership positions, at Banner Medical Group. He joined the Palliative Medicine team at Mayo Clinic Arizona in April 2019. Outside of work, Dr. Guthrie enjoys cooking and the outdoors, playing and watching baseball, and spending time with his wife, two sons, and two dogs.
