Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the pharmacologic properties of buprenorphine.
  2. Illustrate the benefits and burdens of buprenorphine.
  3. Identify strategies for managing buprenorphine during periods of acute pain.

Bio:
Max Stevenson is a Palliative Care Clinical Pharmacist on the palliative care team at MedStar Health Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. After completing his initial studies in pharmacy and a masters in Bioethics at The Ohio State University, Dr. Stevenson performed his Pharmacy Residency at Indiana University before finishing a Pain and Palliative Care residency at The Ohio State. Dr. Stevenson is published in the Journal of Cardiac Failure as well as the Journal of Palliative Medicine and the Journal of Pain and Palliative Care and supports the regional community as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Georgetown and as voting member of the Georgetown-Howard IRB. Dr. Stevenson is an active member of the Society of Pain and Palliative Care Pharmacists, and is professionally interested in bioethics, palliative care, pain and symptom management, informatics, and harm reduction practices for patients struggling with substance abuse and pain.
